This is the 8th grade exit project about the 1960s. In these selections you will learn about the 1960s history. For example you will learn about Martin Luther King’s assassination and the first man in space.
Francis Gary power was the pilot for the American U2 spy plane. This incident was on May 1, 1960. The American U2 spy plane had flown several successful missions. Mr. Gary powers plane was to fly 3,800 miles fromPeshawar. At 70,000 ft soviet ground forces shot a surfaced to air missile at the spy plane with a bomb aboard the plane. Gary Power had disappeared overRussia and was captured and sentence to 10 years in prison. After 18 months the CIS traded him for a spy. In the end president Eisenhower considered it a “Stupid U2 mess”.
On April 12, 1961 Yuri Gagarin was the first man to obit the earth and he was the first man in space. Yuri Gagarin was the pilot for the five ton space craft named vostok 1. Yuri Gagarin was born on March 9, 1934. Yuri loved mathematics and physics. Yuri was 27 years old when he made the 108 minute orbit. Yuri was a test pilot and lieutenant in the Russian Air Force. Yuri was also a Russian and a Christian.
President John F Kennedy was the 35th president of the United States. He was also the first president born in the 20th century. John F Kennedy was born on 29th of May in 1917. President Kennedy was born inBrookline,Massachusetts. President Kennedy went to Harvard and graduated in 1940. President Kennedy was born into a wealthy family. He was six feet tall and his right leg was ¾ of an inch longer than his left. During his second year of college he started the Peace Corp before he was President. President Kennedy was a senator ofMassachusetts but, sadly he died on November 22, 1963.
On may 1963 sadness struck around Charismas time, and lasted through March, in London England. It all started in December with low temperatures and very bad weather. Waterlines were reported frozen everywhere. December 25th was the first heavy snow fall. It snowed for three days straight with 3 feet of snow. Then mini icebergs formed on theThamesRiver which eventually froze. People died by falling in the ice. The Great Freeze then turned into a big slushy mess.
The Lamborghini 350 GT was made on 1964. The top speed was 152 mph with a 5-speed gear box. The 350 GT is a two door Italian sports car. The 350 GT could go from 0-60 in 6.4 seconds. It has a 3.51 v12 engine with a maximum power of 280 bhp and a torque of 440.6 feet. This car weighed a total of 3,196.7 pounds. The Lamborghini was a coupe with rear wheel drive.
The Aston Martin 230 SL was made in 1965. The 230 SL has automatic transition with the engine in front. This car weighs 2,950 lbs. the 230 SL can go from 0-60 in 9.9 seconds and can cover a quarter of a mile in 17 seconds. The top speed is 124 mph with a horse power of 170 bhp. The compression ratio is 9.3:1. It uses petrol gasoline. The price of this car today is around $110,242.
In 1966, the Lamborghini Miura was an exotic super car priced around $19,250. This super car has a v12 engine which is located in the center of the car. The car weighs about 19,250 lbs. this car can go from 0-60 in 6.3 seconds and can cover a quarter of a mile in 14.5 seconds which is an accurate rate. The top speed is 162 mph and the horse power is 350 bhp or 7,000 rpm. It has manual transmission with five gears. The torque is 279 ft-lb or 5,000 rpm and the main bearing is seven.
In 1967 Lamar Hunt gave the Super Bowl its name by watching his play. In the first super bowl the Green Bay Packers played the Kansas City Chiefs. The Packers coach was Vince Lombardi. The Chiefs coach was Hank Stram. This Super Bowl was played at the Los Angelus Coliseum. Bart Starr wasGreen Bay’s Quarterback. Bart Starr was considered the most valuable player with 16 of 23 completed passes. And two touch down passes. At this game there were 61,946 people in the stadium. At the end of the game the Green Bay Packers won 35 to 10. The Green Bay Packer’s team named the super bowl trophy after there Coach Vince Lombardi.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot on April 4, 1968 at 6:01 pm at the age of 39. Martin Luther King, Jr. was at the Lorraine Motel in room 306 on the balcony. Dr. King was shot with a 30-06 hunting rifle. Also found with the rifle was a pair of binoculars, two unopened beer cans, a tack hammer, pliers, a shaving kit, a hair brush, and a pair of men’s shorts. Dr. King was pronounced dead at 7:05 atSt. Joseph’s Hospital. After Dr. King’s death, riots started and as a result, 11 people were killed. The FBI started the largest man hunt on June 8. Finally, James Earl Ray signed a 55 point confession and was sentenced to 99 years in prison.
Neil Armstrong was born inWapakoneta,Ohio on August 5, 1930. Neil Armstrong started flying lessons at age 15. He received his pilot’s license at the age 16. Before getting his drivers license. Neil Armstrong went to theUniversity ofSouthern California and received a master’s degree in aerospace engineering in 1970. Neil Armstrong had flown over 200 models of aircrafts before starting his NASA career inOhio. Neil Armstrong was 39 years old when he went to the moon. This was the first moon landing on July 20 at 4:18 pm. Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon at 10:56 and left with 46 pounds of moon rocks’.
